La Naval celebration aims to deepen priestly commitment

QUEZON CITY, October 1, 2009─Officials of the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary has set this year’s La Naval celebration to support Pope Benedict XVI’s call of strengthening the spiritual commitment of priests.

With the theme "Mother of Christ, Mother of Priests, Mother of All," the celebration aims to remind the people, especially priests, that the Blessed Virgin is a caring and guiding mother to all, said Fr. Giuseppe Pietro Arsciwals, OP, rector of the shrine and prior of the Sto. Domingo Convent.

“In remembering Mary [through images like La Naval], effective preachers and leaders of the Church may be formed,” Arsciwals added.

The 11-day event at the Sto. Domingo Church in Quezon City will start on Oct. 1 with the traditional enthronement of the miraculous image.

Novena Masses will proceed the next day until Oct. 10. The culmination of the La Naval festivity will be on Oct. 11 with a grand procession at 4pm.

La Naval has been venerated since its creation in the late 16th century. Unlike most Marian images during its time, which had been shipped from Spain or Mexico, La Naval was made in the country.

The devotion to the Santisimo Rosario became historically significant during the navy battles in 1646, when the undermanned Filipino and Spanish defenders on board two commercial galleons fought against the invading Dutch armada.

Miraculously, the Filipino-Spanish forces emerged victorious, which people attributed to the intercession of the Santisimo Rosario since the defenders had prayed the rosary and had promised a religious pilgrimage to Santo Domingo, where the Marian icon was enshrined, should they win and survive the battles.

Since then, the miraculous image became known as Nuestra Señora del Santisimo Rosario, La Naval de Manila.

In 1907, the image was canonically crowned in accordance with the Papal Bull of Pope Pius X in 1906.
